General salary observations

  • The average salary increase across nonprofits in the survey was 4.77%
    • This is on par with for-profit industries despite nonprofits historically lagging behind in pay growth. This suggests nonprofits are competing more aggressively for talent, possibly due to labor shortages.
  • Nonprofits in the Human Services job family saw the highest turnover at 13.15%, but offered above-average salary increases.
    • This suggests burnout and job stress play a bigger role in retention than salary alone.
    • Human services organizations may need to emphasize work-life balance initiatives over salary alone to improve retention.
  • Organizations with larger budgets ($50m+) had lower turnover (3.71%) than smaller nonprofits.
  • Higher salaries and strong benefits contribute to better employee retention in sectors like public benefit and health services.
