Connecting donors to opportunities that strengthen communities
Mackenzie Causey, M.A. ’24 lightheartedly calls herself a “philanthropic matchmaker.” In her role as the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships and Donor Engagement at The Dallas Foundation, she helps donors align their values with meaningful opportunities for impact while building relationships that strengthen the community. For this impactful work, Causey was recognized as a Dallas 40 Under 40 recipient in 2022.
“I have the privilege of working alongside generous individuals, families, nonprofits, and community leaders who are passionate about making a difference. I enjoy connecting people with causes that resonate most deeply with them,” said Causey. “The most rewarding part of my work is watching generosity evolve into lasting impact and inspiring the next generation of philanthropists to see the incredible difference they can make.”
Causey’s connection to philanthropy began long before she earned her master’s degree in philanthropic studies. “I’ve always been drawn to the idea that each of us has the ability, and the responsibility, to leave the world better than we found it,” she said. “Early in my career, I realized that philanthropy is where purpose meets action. It is a field that brings together people, ideas, and resources to address complex challenges and create opportunities that can change lives for generations.”
Driven by this realization, Causey sought to further her education. “I wanted to deepen my understanding of philanthropy beyond what I was experiencing in my day-to-day work,” she said. “The M.A. in Philanthropic Studies gave me the opportunity to explore the field through history, ethics, research, and leadership while immediately applying those lessons in practice. My motivation was simple. I wanted to become a more thoughtful leader and better steward of the trust placed in me by donors and the communities we serve.”
Earning her master’s degree challenged Causey to think more deeply about the systems that shape the nonprofit sector. It broadened her perspective beyond addressing immediate needs, prompting her to ask how philanthropy can tackle root causes, foster collaboration, and create sustainable change. “Today, I approach every conversation with donors and community partners through a more strategic and thoughtful lens,” she said. “The experience strengthened not only my knowledge but also my confidence as a leader committed to helping communities flourish.”
As a student based in Texas, Causey was surprised by how connected she felt to the program despite living hundreds of miles away. She found the faculty incredibly accessible and the coursework engaging. She also benefited from collaborating with classmates from around the world. “Those conversations challenged my thinking and continually reminded me that while every community is unique, our shared commitment to creating positive change is universal,” she said. “I never felt like a distance learner. I always felt like an integral part of a vibrant, collaborative academic community.”
For anyone considering the M.A. in Philanthropic Studies program, Causey offers advice. “I would encourage them to take the leap! Investing in your education is ultimately an investment in your ability to create greater impact. The program challenges you intellectually, expands your perspective, and connects you with an extraordinary network of faculty, alumni, and practitioners who are shaping the future of philanthropy,” she said. “Whether you are early in your career or a seasoned professional, you will leave better equipped to lead with purpose, think strategically, and serve your community more effectively. For anyone committed to advancing philanthropy, I cannot imagine a better place to learn.”
Today, Causey remains involved with the school by serving on the Alumni Board. “The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy played an important role in shaping my growth as a leader, and serving allows me to help strengthen that legacy for future generations. I hope my service helps create the same sense of encouragement, belonging, and inspiration that I experienced throughout my own journey.”
Ultimately, Causey’s work is driven by a profound respect for the communities she serves. “What continues to inspire me most is that philanthropy is about far more than giving. It is about listening with humility, building authentic relationships, and empowering communities to shape their own future. At its best, philanthropy does not simply provide solutions, it helps unlock possibilities.”
